Notes From Texas

Here we are in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We’ve been traveling frantically it feels like since Florida. Florida seems like a long time ago. Houston Space Center was well worth the $20 plus ticket. We saw the Saturn rocket, space gadgets, and the first control room. They used it through 1990 or so and then restored back to 1969 technology. After eating a delicious Vietnamese sandwich at Thien An restaurant downtown we moved on to Austin. We stayed in Austin for a couple days and found it to be remarkably similar to Minneapolis. There is a bridge there with 1.5 million bats living under it. Jill and I also visited a dance hall. It was full of real dancers swinging and dipping through the night.

A detour through Fredericksburg led us smack through Texas wine country. We had no idea there was a Texas wine country. We visited a few and tasted some delicious wines and some terrible wines. It seemed that the vineyards were located somewhere else. I’m unsure what makes that area wine country. It is beautiful country though.

We visited San Antonio next and stayed with friends. We visited the Alamo which is underwhelming. We ate lunch on the river walk. The lunch was not good and the river walk is like a mall built right next to a canal. We ate delicious home cooked food by Jill though. Our friends made the stop well worth it.

Down the road we went to Del Rio, Texas and delicious supper at La Hacienda. Then we drove on to a Bed & Breakfast in Marathon. The place is called Eve’s Garden and its unique. The owners are creating it out of Paper-Crete. That’s paper mixed with concrete. The place looks like a colorful moon colony. Most of the lines are curved and everything is 8 inches thick. Our room even had a floor that was made using paper bags. In the morning I went to find the sunrise and happened upon a colony of cats. They wouldn’t get close but I got many pictures. Breakfast was had with yogurt, fruit, and delicious pancakes.

We headed into Big Bend National Park the next day and I’ll write more about that later.

Why are you traveling so frantically? Stop. Relax. Update the blog more, you are slacking. What are you plans? We are going to Big Bend in a few weeks.
