November 25, 2015 Abbotsford, NSW

Jill and I moved from Surry Hills in Sydney to the suburb of Abbotsford today. We were in a dingy hotel and now we found a tranquil airbnb. We flew here from Adelaide on the 21st of November. Sydney lives up to its reputation and then some. We have been walking all over the city in bright sunshine. we saw the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, and the Sydney Observatory. On our first day we walked to the Powerhouse Museum. I went to the Maritime Museum while Jill rested a couple days ago.
The Observatory was unexpectedly fun. It sits on top of a hill and drops a ball on its tower at 1300 every day. This was used historically by captains to set the chronometers on their ships. Now the buildings house a museum of astronomical history. One can here the dreamtime story of how the moon was made and look up the weather at the observatory on any day since the records have been kept. The views from there were fine as well.
The Harbour Bridge is massive. Trains and cars rumble across it all the time. The Opera House is the one that everyone has seen. Its not quite white on the outside more like pale yellow. We haven’t gone inside yet.
the Powerhouse Museum was a power plant. Now it is the museum of Science and industry. We went to see the Lego exhibit. It just happened to be the world wide opening day of it. It will tour around the world, I guess, after Sydney. It’s a little more than just DC comics heroes built out of legos. The Artist, Dave Samaya, represents them in several different ways but it still seems like a commercial for Legos and DC Comics. There was also an exhibit of protest art I thought was amazing. Many little objects made for social movements and protests. Everything from leaflet bombs to the Barbie Liberation Organization had a spot.
The Maritime Museum was big and the permanent exhibits are free! I only spent an hour there and didn’t see much beyond some military history that was mostly about the USA. Maybe I can go back for more.
We are staying in Abbotsford for another week, so, we’ll have time to see the rest of the city. Then we are off to Brisbane for 2 months!
