4/17/2015 Arequipa

Yesterday we went for the Arequipa free walking tour. It was great. Saw some Camelids again but at a much nicer wool store/museum than the bus tour. We saw the volcanoes and had some chocolate, Pisco, and Chicha. After we went to the Santa Catalina Monastery and walked around at dusk. The twilight was great for pictures of that stunning place. There were also candles and lanterns and fires all over to keep our camera occupied.

We ran back to the hostel and met our friends for some Uno and drinks before going to a bar that was hosting a fundraiser for Helping Overcome Obstacles Peru. It’s a charity that runs a school for some squatters who live on the outskirts of town. Bedtime came soon.
Today we laid pretty low. We walked to a Picanteria restaurant but they didn’t have a meal for Jill so we ate at a cevicheria. Then we went to a giant store that may just be a mall. We didn’t buy anything and retreated to the hostel by way of a bakery and the mercado. That’s been our Friday. How was yours?

Beautiful photos, Martin. Where are you now and what country is next? We’re watching a PBS story of the Grand Canyon and national parks (Ken Burns). Maybe you’re visiting the canyon in Peru that’s twice as deep as the G. C. – ?

We are in Arequipa on our way to Tacna. We went to Colca canyon which is deeper than the Grand Canyon. It is debatably the deepest on the world.
